Eighteenth day, mizunoto hitsuji. ¹ The weather was clear. At the Hour of the Horse, I put on my formal attire. I descended from the inner gate corridor, and under the pine tree at the south court I expressed my joyful gratitude to Kita no Mandokoro [Minamoto no Reishi]. This was passed on by the Advisor on the Council of State Tadanori ² {as my emissary}. After the obeisance ended, I exited from the east inner gate, and visited the retired sovereign's palace by carriage to express my joyful gratitude. This was passed on by Kuniaki [as my emissary]. ³ After the dance of gratitude ⁴ ended, because waiting in attendance {on the retired sovereign} was allowed, I danced again {to express my thanks}. I went into the residential palace, sat before His Majesty, and withdrew after a while. However, the Inner Palace Minister has expressed his gratitude and withdrew first, so I had to withdraw after him. Then, I visited the grand senior queen-consort [Fujiwara no Kanshi]. ⁵ As Lord Ariie ⁶ passed on the joyful gratitude, I immediately finished the obeisance and waited in attendance before Her Highness, and presented the gift myself. First day. Hinoe tora. Clear day. I attended a Council of State meeting (jin). After that I received the royal decree making me a minister (daijin). The aforementioned procedure {for this} is on the back. Written on the Back: Today’s procedure began with me dressing in my formal clothes (shōzoku). Then I arrived at the palace. The path I took was as follows: from the Higashi no Tōin to the Nakamikado where I turned to the west, then to the Ōmiya and turned north, then on to the Yōmeimon. Those nobles (kuge) who also attended were Second-rank Middle Counselor [Fujiwara Sanetsune]; Left Palace Guards Captain [Fujiwara no Nobuzane]; Right Major Controller [Fujiwara no Munetada]; Left Major Controller [Minamoto no Mototsuna]; Royal Intimate and Head Middle Commander [Fujiwara no Tadanori]; [Fujiwara no] Ariie; [Fujiwara no] Motokane. These people descended from the carriages {at the Yōmeimon}, and I descended from my carriage entering {the palace grounds} from the south, first southern bay {of the Yōmeimon}. For this path, if one goes on the northern side on the road from western Kushige Street, one passes through the left gate guards and left palace guards’ post and such. Turning south {to go south on the street from the Yōmeimon}, I went in front of the bench (shōji) {another check point}, where I let down my robe’s train, and entered from behind the Fuseimon. I asked my body guards (zuijin) about the time (kokugen). Then, I entered from the Senninmon. I arrived at the inner seats of the Gyōden. <{to seat at} the second and half mat of the major counselors’ seating.> The best seats were to the south. After a little while, I stood and went to the jin no za (chakujin), also called the inner seats (oku no za). ¹ After a little while, the head middle captain said, “The date and time for the minister’s appointment should be asked for.” I received this order and bowed. The middle captain returned. Then I stood, and while I was departing, alongside the bench (shōji) that I originally arrived from, I went down to stand at the eastern bridge in front of the Fuseimon. I faced north, and greeted the previous controller. The path I took to depart was the same as before. There was a departure and standing ceremony (shutsutatsu no gi). It was as usual. The path was the same as before. After I returned {home}, I did not remove my clothing. Then there were deliberations on {my upcoming ministerial} banquet. Examples were {drawn from} Midō [Fujiwara Michinaga], Ujidono [Fujiwara Yorimichi], and Ōdono [Fujiwara Morozane], and I ordered Sir [Fujiwara] Tamefusa to write down our decisions. ² Then I said that a date and time should be selected. This was done by Yin-yang Master [Kamo no] Michitoki ³ and [Abe no] Yasunaga. While we deliberated, there were snacks and we drank. At this time, the present nobles were Popular Affairs Minister [Minamoto Yasuaki]; Provisional Major Counselor [Fujiwara Ietada]; Second-ranking Middle Counselor; Left Palace Guards’ Captain; Council of State Advisor Minamoto Middle Commander; Right Major Controller; Left Major Controller; and Treasury Minister Lord [Minamoto Michinaga]. Royal Intimate and Left Palace Guard Commander [Fujiwara] Iemasa and Minor Counselor Saneaki were the last to be seated. Because his Majesty has returned to the newly built palace, today there will be a seasonal ceremony {on present political affairs and attendees} (shun no gi). After this, a record {of the ceremony} was presented from the Council of State to His Majesty (kansō). Because of this, Sir [Taira no] Tokinori came with the documents for me to inspect the record (nairan) {before it would go to His Majesty}. I met with them wearing an outer robe (hyōi) and cap.
