Twenty-second day. Clear day. At the early Hour of the Dragon {7-9 a.m.}, I soaked in a saltwater bath. Later I set out for the capital at the Hour of the Sheep {1-3 p.m.}. I arrived at the palace at the Hour of the Rooster {5-7 p.m.}. For some reason, today my tired ox wandered into the {imperial} consort’s [Atsushi] stable {and stayed there}. Sir Tokinori investigated the situation {of the ox}, then summoned the yin-yang diviner [Kamono] Mitsuhira and then left him to care for the ox in question. Then Mitsuhira performed the divination {healing ritual}. There were no other things to record {for the day}.

Odono [Fujiwara no Morozane], his {primary} wife [Minamoto no Reishi], and the royal priestess [Princess Reishi] went to take a saltwater bath 2 in Seishinbo. 3
  1. Uji: The area in the southern part of Kyoto along the Uji River. Ever since the Heian period the place has been noted for noblemen’s villas and private retreats. There are also famous temples there, such as Byoudouin, Manpukuji, and Kouseiji, which the Fujiwara clan founded and patronized.

  1. saltwater bath: A salty hot-water or brine bath used either for 1) the therapeutic purpose of healing some physical discomfort, or for 2) purification before attending Shinto shrine rituals.

  1. Seishinbo: The name of a temple cloister {cluster} where the saltwater bath is located. It may have been built by a monk called Sheishin. The site and his temple are unknown.

Today he came {to Uji}. His principal wife [Minamoto no Reishi] 2 and the Great Kamo Priestess [Princess Reishi] came around the Hour of the Rabbit {5-7 a.m.}. They are said to have taken a salt bath 3 at Seishin’s house. During recent days, I heard he would not visit the palace because he suffered defilement.

Today I was called to serve. I visited the palace during the Hour of Dog {7-9 p.m.}, and withdrew after a while.

  1. Princess Reishi (1078-1144), daughter of Morozane’s adopted daughter Fujiwara no Kenshi (Queen of Emperor Shirakawa). After Kenshi’s death in 1084, Princess Reishi was raised by Morozane and his wife (朝日日本歴史人物事典).

  1. A period of seclusion indoors prescribed by yin-yang divination (onmyōdō) in order to avoid inauspicious influences. Some practices during this time were: fasting, rejecting outside visitors into the estate, and avoiding raising one’s voice.

  1. Fujiwara no Tametaka 藤原為隆 (1070-1130) was the son of Fujiwara no Tamefusa. He reached junior third rank and authored a journal, the Eishoki, that has entries from 1105-1129.

  1. Nairan was a responsibility of a viceroy that entailed viewing documents sent to His Majesty, and documents sent out by His Majesty. He was, therefore, “the royal eye.”

  1. A ritual bath for the purpose of purification. May also be applied to cleansing death after a funeral.

Next Ōdono [Fujiwara no Morozane] and Kita no Mandokoro [Minamoto no Reishi] were called to visit Her Majesty. They returned later in the evening. At the Hour of the Dog {7-9 p.m.} there was a fire in the servants’ (shimobe) quarters. And again at the Hour of the Sheep {1-3 PM} there was another fire. I heard that it was in the utility buildings of the Nijō mansion.. Ōdono went there and I went as well. Many people gathered to look at it. Some children were burned.
