康和二年正月九日 Kōwa 2 {1100} 1.9
Translated by Elinor Lindeman
Ninth day. Hinoe ne.
1
The weather was clear. At dawn I {practiced} playing wind and string instruments—biwa, koto, and flute—keeping the beat, and singing. Next I looked at the horse.
2
During the Hour of the Sheep {1-3 p.m.} the Royal secretary-controller came. Despite my ritual seclusion, I met with him. He said that on the following eleventh day the Promotion in Ranks for Women (Onna jōi) would take place.
I responded, saying that I should tell Ōdono

of this, and the controller promptly departed. During the Hour of the Rooster {5-7 p.m.} the head of the Left Palace Guards came to offer thanks {for my help with his promotion}. Because of my ritual seclusion, however, he stayed outside the gate and then left. During the Hour of the Horse {11 a.m.-1 p.m.}, I bathed. After that, I met with Prelate (hōgen) Kankei of Mudōji.
