Ninth day. Hinoe ne. 1 The weather was clear. At dawn I {practiced} playing wind and string instruments—biwa, koto, and flute—keeping the beat, and singing. Next I looked at the horse. 2 During the Hour of the Sheep {1-3 p.m.} the Royal secretary-controller came. Despite my ritual seclusion, I met with him. He said that on the following eleventh day the Promotion in Ranks for Women (Onna jōi) would take place.

I responded, saying that I should tell Ōdono 3 of this, and the controller promptly departed. During the Hour of the Rooster {5-7 p.m.} the head of the Left Palace Guards came to offer thanks {for my help with his promotion}. Because of my ritual seclusion, however, he stayed outside the gate and then left. During the Hour of the Horse {11 a.m.-1 p.m.}, I bathed. After that, I met with Prelate (hōgen) Kankei of Mudōji. 4

九日、丙子ひのえね、天晴れ。早旦そうたん一身管絃かんげん、琵琶・箏・笛・拍子ひょうし・歌を兼ぬ。次に馬を見る。未の時ばかり頭弁とうのべん来たる。堅固けんごの物忌ものいみと雖も相い会う。而して来たる十一日女叙位おんなじょいを行わるべきの由を示す。

答えて云わく、大殿おおどのに申し可し者てへり、即すなわち彼弁かのべん退出す。酉の時ばかり左兵衛さひょうえの督かみ慶賀けいがに依り来たらると雖も、物忌に依り門外もんがい自より還えられ了おわんぬ。午の時ばかり浴す。其の後無動寺むどうじの法眼ほうげん寛慶かんけいと対面す。
