2012 Kambun Workshop: Heian Materials

Professor Hideo Yamaguchi, University of Tokyo
Professor Tomoyasu Kato, University of Tokyo
Professor Joan Piggott, University of Southern California

The Project for Premodern Japanese studies Kambun workshop of the Summer of 2012 focused on Heian Kambun materials. Participants spent four weeks doing directed readings and translations of Heian Period texts. Professor Tomoyasu Kato and Professor Hideo Yamaguchi of the University of Tokyo Historiographical Institute led the discussions, and they gave open lectures on Heian sources, courtier journals, and runaway workers.

The Project for Premodern Japanese Studies provided residency at university apartments adjacent to the USC campus for visiting scholars who could use the extensive East Asian library, which houses than 4000 volumes in the Japan collection. The USC History department, the East Asia Studies center, and USC's conference services served as staff support to aid participants.

Nadia Kanagawa also produced a translation of Katō Sensei's Guide to Heian Era Kambun.
