Professor Motoo Endō, University of Tokyo
Professor Joan Piggott, University of Southern California

The Project for Premodern Japanese studies Kambun workshop for the Summer of 2008 focused on Heian Kambun materials. Participants spent four weeks doing directed readings and translations of Heian Period texts concerning the era of retired monarchs (insei). Professor Motoo Endo of the University of Tokyo Historiographical Institute led the discussions.

The Project for Premodern Japanese Studies provided residency at university apartments adjacent to the USC campus for visiting scholars who could use the extensive East Asian library, which houses than 4000 volumes in the Japan collection. The USC History department, the East Asia Studies center, and USC's conference services served as staff support to aid participants.
