2016 Kambun Workshop: Tôji Hyakugô Monjo

Professor Toshiko Takahashi
Professor Joan Piggott

The Project for Premodern Japan Studies 2016 Kambun Workshop focused on the Tōji Hyakugō Monjo, a massive document collection spanning several centuries that belonged to Tōji, a large temple. The collection consists of nearly 25,000 documents, most from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Professor Takahashi, a specialist on the collection who has spent her career at the University of Tokyo’s Historiographical Institute (Shiryō Hensanjo), led the workshop with Professor Joan Piggott of the USC History Department.

Participants worked with a variety of materials, including ones detailing elaborate temple ritual, estate conflicts, and descriptions of monkish parties. Professor Takahashi also gave a talk on using the online archives and the digitization of materials.
