Professor Joan Piggott, University of Southern California

The Project for Premodern Japanese studies Kambun workshop of the summer of 2013 focused on late Medieval Kambun materials. Participants spent four weeks doing directed readings and translations. Professor Noriko Kurushima and Professor Shin’ichoro of the University of Tokyo Historiographical Institute led the discussions, and they gave open lectures on the Medieval city, as well as commoner uprisings during the period.

The Project for Premodern Japanese Studies provided residency at university apartments adjacent to the USC campus for visiting scholars who could use the extensive East Asian library, which houses than 4000 volumes in the Japan collection. The USC History department, the East Asia Studies center, and USC's conference services served as staff support to aid participants.
