2004 Heian Kambun Workshop

Professor Tomoyasu Katō, University of Tokyo
Professor Joan Piggott, University of Southern California

The Project for Premodern Japanese studies Kambun workshop of the Summer of 2004 (July 12 to Aug 6) focused on Heian Kambun materials. Participants spent four weeks doing directed readings and translations of Heian Period texts. Professor Tomoyasu Kato of the University of Tokyo Historiographical Institute led the discussions and gave several lectures open to the USC community on wooden documents, the provinces, and regional administration.

The Project for Premodern Japanese Studies provided residency at university apartments adjacent to the USC campus for visiting scholars who could use the extensive East Asian library, which houses than 4000 volumes in the Japan collection. The USC History department, the East Asia Studies center, and USC's conference services served as staff support to aid participants.
